Traffic Congestion
Up Nationwide
American commuters are getting
nowhere fast, according to the annual report from the Texas Transportation
Institute on congestion in 68 urban areas. For example:
- Americans spend three times as much time in traffic as they did 20 years ago.
- Each year, the average person spends almost a full work week -- 36 hours --
sitting in traffic.
- L.A. drivers have it the worst -- being stuck in traffic on average more than
56 hours a year.
- In New York City and area suburbs, they're stuck 34 hours a year.
- This congestion costs $78
billion a year in wasted time and gasoline.
The results from this study
reinforce the value of telecommuting as a necessary and effective step to ease
congestion on our nation's overcrowded highways.
